He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of Jehovah, He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in whom I trust. – Psalm 91:1-2
I love this scripture. It makes me feel so safe and secure in God’s love and less alone during difficult times.
But sometimes it can feel like God is far away and being silent, and during these times it can often be hard to pray. Or other times I can feel so fed up or upset about something that I don’t even have the words to know what to say when I’m trying to pray.
It’s during these moments that I just want to feel the presence of God. Now, we all know that God is omnipresent and everywhere all the time, but I think that everyone has ways of feeling closer to God. It’s that secret place that you can go to when you just want to feel peace and at ease.
For me, that place is walking along the beach with my feet in the shallow waters of the sea. There’s something about standing on the edge of the huge ocean where I always get a revelation of how amazing God is, and the enormity of His creation.
At the beginning of this year I was in Australia and visited many different beaches, and every time I felt an overwhelming sense of God’s presence. I can walk along a beach by myself for hours or I can just simply stand with the water lapping over my feet and feel safe and secure in knowing who God is, it’s a feeling of total assurance that I just don’t get anywhere else.
There have been times when my soul has felt so heavy with the pressures of life and I’ve been able to just go and be still, knowing that God is in control.
“Be still and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10
Your secret place is a completely personal experience to you and could be anywhere or anything. Perhaps it’s a particular park you visit, or a room in your house. Perhaps it’s a song that you listen to that just moves your spirit or maybe it’s particular words from a scripture or book that give you peace and clarity.
Whatever or wherever it is, just remember that if ever you’re going through a difficult situation or you are struggling to pray, you can find your secret place and dwell in the presence of God and experience the peace that only He can bring.
Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. – Phillippians 4:7
