Is Reality TV Impacting My Reality?

written by Emma August 23, 2016
Is Reality TV Impacting My Reality?

KUWTK, MIC, TOWIE, RHOA…. If you know what those acronyms stand for then you are on my reality TV radar.

I’m the breed of human that struggles to sit through 1 episode of a proper series like Breaking Bad or even Gossip Girl, yet when it comes to the Real House wives of Anywhere in The World or the Made in Chelsea lot I can’t get enough!

Do you ever watch an episode of Kardashians and find yourself craving one of those big takeaway salads? Or after TOWIE realising someone, somewhere, owes you an ‘apology’.

I realised my addiction had gone a little too far when I bought a subscription to Hayu, the Netflix of reality TV. It started out as a ‘free trial’ but before I knew it I was paying £3.99 a month for easy access to all my favourite shows.

The thing with reality TV is, that it’s not even really reality. Have you ever noticed in the opening credits of KUWTK all of the sisters and Kris are executive producers of the show, this means they get to pick and choose what is aired and how they are viewed. And of course, at the start of TOWIE the lady says that basically everything is fake…”but the people are all real”, well duh!

I did a little self-assessment and it didn’t take long for me to notice that after a reality TV binge, my own reality begins to change. I start to look at my life through a different lens, wishing I had more money, nicer hair, more free time, or even feeling more argumentative!

The saying “everything in moderation” doesn’t just apply to chocolate and carbs, but to what we are consuming with our eyes and ears too! I enjoy reality TV, and although it’s not the most wholesome thing to watch, I like it because I don’t have to use my brain so it’s my way of completely switching off. I don’t need to stop watching it altogether, but I can control how much I watch, and be alert to it impacting my mood and self-esteem.

“Watch your thoughts; they become words.
Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character.
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.”

If you ever find yourself thinking about having bigger lips or a nicer car, first of all think about where those thoughts came from. And if it’s because maybe you’ve watched one too many shows this week or scrolled through too much Instaglam… then consider having a little break from it for a week and see how you get on!

It’s important we fill our minds with truth and good stuff, because after all, your mind is a precious place and you’ve only got one…So look after it!
