Single, Secure, and Significant

written by Katie December 14, 2018
Single, Secure, and Significant

At this time of year when everything gets that bit more romantic, for those who are single it can sometimes bring up questions.

Most of us have been in that position where you are the only single person in your friendship group or everyone seems to be getting married really young and it feels time is running out. Or when you wonder if you’ll be single forever and whether you’re single through some fault of your own. So many questions!

In an attempt to answer some of these questions with what the Bible says I want you first to know that if you follow Jesus you are secure, significant and accepted by him.

It’s easy to brush past these words and think it’s either not true or feel like you’ve heard it all before. The reality is that lots of the battles of being single come from lies about who we are, and we can even doubt if God is really good?

Whether you are single or in a relationship it remains exactly the same that Jesus died on a cross for you so that you could have a relationship with God. Understanding our identity in God is a crucial part of your life and will be the foundation for doing singleness, a relationship, or any part of life well.

“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” – John 1:12

The good news of the bible is that as children we are completely known and loved, God has a plan for our lives and he cares about us. Questions like ‘will I be single forever?’ can be scary when you believe you aren’t significant to God, or that He doesn’t care about your desires. So it’s important to remind ourselves of how God sees us – secure, significant, and accepted!

So how do you choose to believe truth and be content (yelp! annoying word!) being single?

  • Be real with yourself – what are you really believing when you feel annoyed at your singleness?
  • Be honest with friends around you- if they’ve abandoned you for a boyfriend, kindly tell them how you feel. Ask them to pray with you, encourage you or just spend time with you when you need it!
  • Get some go-to bible verses. These are really powerful for when you are struggling and need an instant reminder of the truth. The word of God will always be the answer.
