Whether you’re thinking about what to study at university, or looking to get some more work experience next summer, I hope this little ‘day in the life’ will give you an insight into more of what my job entails working as a social media assistant for a British brand.
I got this role after studying journalism, plus after lots and lots of interning! After my contact working for a magazine had come to an end I decided to pursue a social media role — this felt like a natural progression, especially since social media is so heavily part of our world now. I hope you enjoy reading it!
A day in the life
5.45am: My third alarm goes off so I finally decide on getting out of bed and hop into the shower. Apply some make-up, loosely curl my hair and get dressed. Today it’s black skirt with tights, an oversized jumper and flat pointed boots.
7.00am: Head downstairs, prepare my coffee in my to-go cup and put my packed lunch in my bag. I’ve worked out the amount I can save on bringing my own food so this is something I try to do everyday. Leave the house to catch the train to work with my sister, who is commuting to uni today.
8.30am: Arrive at work early. Check through emails and our social media calendar to see what needs doing today. Write my to-do list and prioritise what needs to be done first. Reply to Instagram, Facebook and Twitter comments from posts that went live last night. Colleagues arrive so we all head to the canteen to grab a coffee. I get a cappuccino (free at the coffee machine!) Drink it at my desk where I also eat breakfast I bought from home. Today it’s plain yogurt and granola.
11.15am: Working on Christmas content and feeling incredibly festive. Finish my article on Christmas organisation and approach some bloggers who I’m planning to commission for recipe articles. We have a budget so can get external writers to contribute on the blog. Chat to my social media manager about Instagram content for the week. It might only be November but we’re diving head-first into Christmas posts.
12pm: Snack on some rice cakes I found in my drawer. Boring, I know, but it will fill that pre-lunch tummy rumble. Grab an earl grey tea from the canteen (tea bag brought from home) and browse through images from our shoot last week. They’re incredibly festive and fill me with all kinds of joy. Remind myself it’s only November and reply to some emails from my boss about ideas for a video shoot.
1.15pm: Lunchtime, yay! Get my lunch out from the fridge. Today it’s a homemade cheese, ham and lettuce sandwich on sourdough bread, plus an apple and a few baby tomatoes. Since I ate at my desk I head outside with some girls for some fresh air. Our offices are right by the River Thames so it always makes for a lovely lunchtime stroll. Thankfully it wasn’t raining today.
2.00pm: We have a team meeting with the head of fashion so I present the images we took at our shoot last week. This is a great time to discuss emails for the upcoming weeks and if we need to push anything out on social. I love the creative energy when ideas come together! Grab a tea from the canteen after and sit back at my desk.
5.00pm: Home time! Catch my usual train and browse Pinterest for dream kitchen ideas (anyone else do this?) I’m serving at our youth group tonight so I’ll quickly pop home for dinner and then head out again.
6.15pm: Get home and tidy away my work bag. Freshen up for youth, eat my dinner and read a few Psalms from the beautiful Passion version (an absolute must-read!) to prepare my heart to serve tonight. It’s youth Alpha and I can’t wait.
7:20pm: Arrive at youth to help set up, pray with the team and greet the 13-17 year-olds. Chat to the girls about their week and play a game of Scrabble together (well, our own version of it anyway). We get into groups and discuss tonight’s topic: prayer. I’m so passionate about this age group and love hearing about what’s on their heart. Feeling encouraged by them.
9:00pm: Waiting for parents to arrive and begin to clear up the various games, empty chocolate-smeared plates and put all the chairs back. Feeling tired after a long day but it’s so worth it.
9:30pm: Home now and begin preparing my lunch for tomorrow. Lay out my clothes for the next day and turn to my bible for my evening study. I’m currently reading Isaiah and am learning so much. Before bed I call my boyfriend to see how his day has gone and then it’s lights out by just after 10pm.
