What Beyoncé Taught Me About Hard Work

written by Esther Egbeyemi April 20, 2018
What Beyoncé Taught Me About Hard Work

Last weekend, the world was treated to an absolutely insane performance by the incredible singer, dancer and all-round super woman that is Beyoncé Knowles at this year’s Coachella.

Queen B’s set saw her perform for two straight hours, where she not only sang a number of her biggest hits effortlessly whilst maintaining a perfectly perfect pitch, but also executed some stellar choreography alongside an army of dancers and her very own marching band, she even changed her nail polish half-way through the set!

When I was younger, I was an absolutely massive Beyoncé fan and although I don’t listen to her as much now, I couldn’t deny that her latest performance was arguably the best I’d seen in my entire life. I loved that she used her performance to honour historically black universities and colleges in America, that she had taken the time to incorporate so many young, talented individuals and how she also got her sister Solange and Destiny’s Child (aka, the greatest girl band of all time, check out our interview with Michelle) involved, highlighting the importance of sisterhood and family.

However, aside from the general impressiveness of it all, the main thing that stood out to me was Beyoncé’s remarkable work ethic. I can only begin to imagine the number of hours, the sacrifice required to pull off such a spectacular performance, it makes me exhausted just thinking about it!

It also got me thinking: what would we be able to achieve if we put that much effort into the things we did? I actually came across a tweet which reflected my feelings:

Just think about it. You don’t have to BE the Beyoncé, but we should all reach for our own Beyoncéness.

Like the tweet mentions, I’m not saying that we should all aspire to be Beyoncé. However, I do think that if we give 1000% to the things we’re passionate about, to what drives us; if we really invest time into developing our talents and abilities, we might just surprise ourselves with what we’re capable of.

This is a concept which also falls in line with Biblical principles and I’m reminded of Colossians 3:23 which says:

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

I’m not saying we should work ourselves to exhaustion as that would be unhealthy, but I feel that verse is a clear reminder that we should put maximum effort into all we do as God is deserving of our very best.

A friend recently told me something which I’ve been thinking about and I’d like to share it with you too; God is the provider of opportunities which is amazing. However, it’s totally up to us to put in the hard work. When we take hold of opportunities and give everything, the outcome is often more than we could even begin to imagine.
