Did your parents ever make you help rake the garden during autumn, when the leaves turn brown like burnt toast and litter the grass?
Or did you ever see a lawn being mown in summer, when the grass has tangled because it got so long?
Or you have ever had to yank up ugly weeds, to give flowers a chance to show off their rainbow colours?
Doing that stuff isn’t always fun. I usually do gardening only if I’m promised a super deluxe hot chocolate at the end, complete with cream, marshmallows and sprinkles.
But even more crucial is my interior gardening. Watering my heart, mind and soul with God’s word, and letting Him yank up the weeds that don’t belong there.
The thing is, we’re only free to dream audacious God dreams when our hearts are free of those weeds.
But how do I know what my heart’s weeds look like?
That secret thing I know I shouldn’t do. That lie I told. Those deep fears that have nothing to do with God’s love for me. That choked up anger and bitterness. Unforgiveness. Apathy.
Decide TODAY that you’re not gonna have a choked up garden anymore. Decide to let God get to work in you. His Word tells us that “as a person thinks in their heart, so they are.” (Proverbs 23:7) Know that fearful and angry thoughts can only make you more fearful and angry. Know that loving and creative thoughts can only bring you closer to God.
I heard an incredible story recently about a frog in a well. He was so happy down there! It was damp and wet, just how he liked it. He thought that this was as good as life got for a frog.
Then one day, something made him do a huge HOP to the rim of the well, where he peered over the top. WOW! There was bright green marshy grass, and he could hear the croaking of other frogs.
Best of all, there was a huge lake sparkling in the sunshine. Suddenly, his happy little well world looked very small indeed.
In the same way, our imagination is only truly world changing and blindingly brilliant when we let God lift us up. As we rise out of our wells, we can feel fresh air surrounding us and imagine a world that we didn’t even know could be imagined.
Dream on with God, and don’t let anyone tell you that you shouldn’t!
