Women Of The Bible: Deborah

written by Mary June 25, 2019
Women Of The Bible: Deborah

If you want an action packed, hero filled, plot twisting, drama bursting book in the bible, go to Judges! Right at the heart of this book, is a fierce female fighting for the promises and victories of God. As a courageous leader and prophetess, standing confidently in her calling, she knew everything she achieved was in the strength of God.

Judges 4-5

Deborah is the only female judge in the bible. It was unexpected for a woman to be in a prominent position of power, yet she securely steps into leadership, as she knew that she was chosen, under the authority of God – Go on girl!

Deborah was a prophetess who gained victories, through wisdom given to her by God. A prophetess is a girl with faith, who clearly hears the voice of God, then speaks out this truth to encourage, lead and challenge others. Prophecies from God come in many forms and can help people understand God’s truth in a deeper way.

It is like lighting a sparkler: something which seems dull, is all of a sudden mesmerising and full of light. When a prophetic message from God is shared there is a new, brilliant understand of God’s heart. Deborah led by first listening and following. She was accepted, because God trusted her to be faithful to Him, knowing His voice and therefore putting His plan into action. Her resolute desire was always to see God’s people freed and plan fulfilled.

Often, great examples of role models are found in movies – like Dumbledore or Aslan. These characters are positioned to guide and encourage others, through their wisdom and sacrificial example of living. Role models not only seek to succeed in what God is calling them into but also lead others into their own victories with God. Deborah was an incredible role model for Jael.

She watched Deborah bravely stepping into her calling, which in turn inspired Jael to realise her purpose too! She played a crucial role in Deborah’s narrative as she helped kill an enemy in their battle, with one of the weirdest weapons in the bible – a tent peg?!

If Deborah had never stepped into her calling, would Jael have ever finished this battle for them? Deborah is seen as such an influential leader because it was never about her. She saw God’s promises fulfilled because she remained faithful to Him, trusted in His plan and always gave Him the glory.

Ways we can look to Deborah as a role model today:

  • In everything you do, listen to God’s instructions! As long as you are allowing Him to lead, you will never be in a position where you can’t find victory.
  • Look out for people in your life who are role models. Watch how they are in their relationship with God and follow their wisdom. Remember, someone may be watching you too! You may be a role model to someone else around you, by the way you walk with God.
  • Give thanks for every success you gain! God deserves the glory as He give us our victories.
  • Don’t be afraid to stand out against the normal way of life, to follow God’s plan for you. It will be far greater than any direction the world tries to lead you in!
