Life can be A LOT sometimes. We’re all trying our very best to be good friends, daughters, siblings, students, employees, volunteers, church members and all-round human beings! This is all hugely important stuff, but in the middle of us working hard to make the people around us happy, how often do we practice self-care?
I’ve come up with a few tips to help you take better care of yourself in three key areas: mind, body and soul.
Healthy mind
Many of us live in environments that are non-stop. Whether you’re in a busy city that literally never sleeps, or that constant stimulation comes from interactions on social media, we shouldn’t allow ourselves to get lost in all the chaos taking place around us on a daily basis. In order to give your mind a break, take some time out to journal, finally read that book you’ve been meaning to get around to for ages, explore the great outdoors, or simply switch off from social media for a few days. All of these can help you maintain a healthy, clutter-free mind, allowing you to enjoy the simple things in life.
Healthy body
The Bible calls our bodies “temples of the Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians 6:19), and it’s vital that we take care of them. At the end of the day, you only get the one – at least in this lifetime! Having a healthy body doesn’t mean you should restrict deny yourself of all the wonderful treats the Lord has blessed us with – there are way too many! Instead, focus on fuelling your body with good healthy foods that keep your body happy. And remember, a healthy body isn’t just about what you eat. Find a form of exercise that you enjoy and please please PLEASE, be sure to practice good sleeping habits. Most people require about seven to nine hours of sleep per day and the younger you are, the more sleep your body needs.
Healthy soul
The Oxford dictionary defines our soul as: “The spiritual or immaterial part of a human being or animal, regarded as immortal.” The soul represents the deepest part of us as human beings and as Christians, we believe the soul to be eternal.
It’s vital that we nurture it. Some great ways to nourish your soul include spending time reading God’s word, meditating on it and praying. It’s also important to focus on the things that make you happy. What are you passionate about? What matters to you? How can you better yourself as a person?
Thinking about some of these bigger questions and taking small steps to answer them is a really good practice.
