Have you ever heard someone say ‘be careful what you say… words have power? I have heard this all my life but I didn’t know what it truly meant. So, I went on a little quest to find out.
Did you know…God was essentially the first to speak. He made the earth by the words of his mouth.
“In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, let there be light: and there was light” – Genesis 1:1-3
If you read further along chapter 1 in Genesis, we also find out we were created in His own image. (Genesis 1:27). Isn’t it beautiful that we are created in the image of the one who created the earth? The creator of all things created! Furthermore, in chapter two of Genesis, we also find out Adam named all the animals in the garden of Eden.
“Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So, the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.” – Genesis 2: 19
Reading through Genesis made me realise the importance of our words. We are created in God’s image so our words can literally shape lives. This includes the words we say about ourselves as well as others. It says in Ephesians:
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” – Ephesians 4:29
God has given us the freedom to say whatever we want but he wants us to use our mouths to encourage. Motivational speakers understand the power of words and positivity and try to teach others about it too, which is probably why they are so popular!
So, next time when you are in a position where you could choose negative words or positive words, remind yourself that words have power. People will remember what you say to them and how you make them feel, so think twice before you speak… you might just be able to make someones day!
