Bible Study: A Father’s Love

written by Natasha June 19, 2016
Bible Study: A Father’s Love

Whether today is a day you celebrate or not, Father’s Day is a great time to focus on our Father in heaven. We’ve put this quick bible study together to help us think about some of our Heavenly Father’s attributes!

Sacrificial Love

‘For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life’ -John 3:16

God loves us so much that He sacrificed His only Son to die for our sins. This was the only way in which the world could be redeemed. Paul talks about this in Romans in such a perfect way [Romans 5].

All of our sins that were part of our ‘old self’ were crucified with Jesus on that cross. Why should we then live like our old self? In the same way that our sins died with Christ, we also rose again with Jesus to become a new creation. He did all of this for us so that we could live freely.

His loving discipline

‘Do not lose heart when He rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines those He loves’ –Hebrews 12:5-6

You know that little nudging in your heart? Or the little voice that whispers to your soul? Or the very active conscience that tells you that what you’re doing is wrong?

God disciplines us not because He dislikes us and wants to make our lives a misery, but because He knows our future and therefore knows what is best for us.

Eternal Provider

‘And God is able to make ALL grace abound to you so that in ALL things at ALL times, having ALL that you need, you WILL abound in every good work.’ -2 Corinthians 9:8

What a great Father we have! Sometimes I can’t comprehend the depth of this passage. This is love in its finest form.

Comforter

‘Cast your burdens on the Lord, and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous fall.’ –Psalm 55:22

He is the only one that can bear our burdens, our anxieties, fears, sadness, grief, anger, frustration, pain and the list goes on. No human can ever do this; it’s impossible, but not impossible for God.

He has an inheritance for us

‘In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you’ –John 14:2-3

Think of it this way, when we’ve finished our task on earth the party doesn’t stop here, God has the best thing imaginable waiting for us in heaven. Before we were even born God already had your room picked out in your favourite colours, all your favourite things just waiting there for you. How amazing is that!?

He chose us

‘For you are a holy people, who belong to the Lord your God. Of all the people on earth, the Lord your God has chosen you to be his own special treasure.’ –Deuteronomy 7:6

Even for those of you who don’t have physical father figures in your life, know that your eternal Father watches over you with love.

Happy Father’s day!
