Have you ever wondered how some people just seem to hear from God? Or have you ever thought why doesn’t God speak to me? You may even believe the lie that God would not want to speak to you at all and if He did it would only be to tell you off!
First of all let me say that there are some big fat, whopping lies in those thoughts you may be having!
God chose you because He adores you and He wants to partner with you and use you to be His voice and show His love to the world. God is a loving father and wants to teach you and not to tell you off! He is the most perfect example of a loving parent you could ever imagine and He wants to help you become more like His son Jesus, little by little, day by day.
To be able to do this, He needs to talk with you and for you to listen for His still small voice in the everyday. The best way to hear God is to spend time with Him in the ‘Secret Place’. This is the place where you and God can spend quality time together, uninterrupted.
I love this description of it as it speaks of an intimacy and this is what it’s all about for developing a relationship with God where you can hear Him and it becomes a two way chat with your ‘dad’. This is where you learn to listen to Him and you need to be still and allow time where you are unhindered or distracted by all the other ‘stuff’.
Everybody has their own ‘special place’ that they can escape to where they can be still and ready to hear from God.
Psalm 46:10 He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God’.
When I get to spend time with God I have found having a notebook to hand is helpful for two reasons:
- So you can record what God says as it’s so easy to forget after the moment has passed.
- If you have other thoughts that keep invading your head space write them down so you can focus back on Him and come back to those thoughts later.
I personally love writing down or ‘journaling’ with God and I recommend you date your books so you can look back and see when God spoke to you, about what and as a visible reminder to yourself that you are hearing from Him. It also helps build your faith and makes you more grateful as you see His work in your life and through you.
Psalm 91:1. ‘He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of The Almighty.’
I personally am a big fan of journaling and as I have got more into writing down my thoughts and what God is saying I have started drawing in my journals (I am a visual learner and this is often how God speaks to me).
I have recently come across girls on Instagram who illustrate their bibles as they feel God speak to them. They are absolutely stunning to look at. I find them very inspirational and I love to be creative, so they tick all the boxes for me.
Go and try it out, just type ‘Illustrated faith’ on Insta and prepare to be amazed!
Until next time, go and enjoy some quiet time with God and write down what you hear!

Thanks for this wonderful piece. I love writing in journals and encourage people to do so. Just last night I heard God say I need to spend more time with Him so that I can hear Him more. This morning, I see this post. Thanks Sarah for sharing.
I’m so glad it was helpful and you feel encouraged. X
