My Favourite Love Song

written by Bex December 17, 2017
My Favourite Love Song

I LOVE a good wedding! My favourite part has got to be when the bride walks up the aisle and the groom catches a glimpse of his wife-to-be. That moment always catches my breath. On my own wedding day it was so overwhelming and I cannot even begin to articulate the emotions I felt.

A few months ago we were at a gorgeous wedding. The bride walked up the aisle and her entrance song was ‘Thinking out loud’ by Ed Sheeran. Wow! The words of that song are so beautiful (mushy too lol) but you could tell that song was ‘their’ song. Every word spoken in the song was how they felt about each other and it reflected the commitment they were about to make.

Every love song has so much power. They express and focus love in a way that couldn’t be done otherwise. I sing songs over my two boys all the time. In fact while I was pregnant with Malachi (now age 12) I used to sing over my big belly. I’d make friends sing along with me too!

They were silly made up songs but they were sung in lovey-dovey moments. Judah (Age 6) has had to hear so many silly songs I’ve made up about him over the years. Even now when I sing them I see this look on his face that says ‘aww she loves me.’ Well I hope I interpret it correctly and it’s not ‘I wish mum would shut up with those songs!’

It’s crazy to think that songs can be so powerful and they can have such a profound effect on us. I’ve listened to some songs that have caused me to have goosebumps. Other songs have left me in tears or just feeling so happy and energetic!

The other day I came across a verse in the Bible that talks about God singing songs over us. It totally blew my mind. It said:

‘‘For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty saviour. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs’’ – Zephaniah 3:17

I love when you read from the Bible and the words literally jump out from the page right into your heart. I’d never thought about God singing songs over me. I knew we were called to worship Him and sing songs to Him but never had I considered Him singing over me. It led me to wonder what God’s song over me would be like.

I hope you don’t mind but I thought I’d share what I think the words of His song over me may be like.

“You were in my mind long before you were even born

My love for you is incomparable to any other love you’ve experienced.

You are my child. The plans I have for you are to give you hope and a future.

You don’t have to be perfect for me to love you, I’ll love you as you are

My gracious hand is upon you

I’ll never leave you

I’ll complete you

I’ll forgive you when you mess up

My arms will always be open to you.

I’ll be your comforter, your anchor, your rock.

I’ll never lie to you, disappoint you or let you down.

You may not always understand my ways, but know everything I do, I do it in perfect love for you.

I’ll never leave you

I’ll complete you.”

Making time to think about what God would say to me has been life-changing. God can’t lie. Everything He speaks is truth. When He says He loves you, He LOVES YOU. He can’t go back on His words and He’s unchanging.

I often think about what I want to say to God but I hardly ever make time to listen to Him. Most of the time when I do make time to listen, it’s to receive guidance, not to receive affirmation or affection. I love that God sings songs of affirmation over us, songs to build us up, encourage us and remind us of how much he loves us.

Perhaps today in your own quiet time you could reflect on what God’s love song to you would be like. What would God say to you? It’s going to be the best and most trusted love song you’ll ever hear.

“As a bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you” – Isaiah 62:5
