It’s that time again; acne break outs, constant tiredness, headaches, backaches, random food cravings and not to mention that evil gremlin squeezing your insides. These are just some of the symptoms of having your period. And on top of all that, why does everyone have to be sooooo annoying? (Unless they have food) Every question or comment simply drives you up the wall.
So why did God create these symptoms, or even periods at all? Without going in to too much biological detail, without your period you would not be able to conceive; God trusts us and even commands us to ‘be fruitful and multiply’ Genesis 1v28, he trusts us with life. Why in this particular way is yet to be answered but the bottom line is, God created your menstrual cycle, complete with hormones, beautifully and wonderfully just like the rest of you!
However, I do believe that before sin came in to the world, periods and labour were pain-free. So the symptoms, like labour pains, are a result of sin. But you are saved by grace and therefore have the power to conquer anything that stands in your way!
Take the hormones during your period as the perfect way to practice love, peace and especially self-control in an…uncomfortable situation.
Ephesians 5v12; ‘Therefore be imitators of God… ‘walk in Love as Christ also loved us and gave Himself for us’. It doesn’t say ‘unless you’re on your period ladies’… we still have to ‘bear with one another in Love’ and ‘increase in brotherly [and sisterly] love daily’! Even if those 5 days are your period ones…
If Jesus could forgive and have such self-control on the cross in His last moments, then you can do it too!
“In your anger do not sin…and do not give the devil a foothold” – Ephesians 4v26-27 Don’t let anger welcome the devil in, he’ll use your irritancy to throw you a pity party…and that’s not a very fun kind of party! He would love to take your ‘time of the month’ state and make it who you are. Don’t even give him the chance to.
I know how hard it can be; I remember having a concert at school and being in literally every act.
I got my period that morning and was so stressed out, running round every where. It felt like I was sorting everything and everyone out. The concert went so well but I have never felt frustration like that before. I ended up being snappy with the people I love the most and an all-round monster. I got home, climbed in to bed and cried my eyes out with frustration thinking if it was all worth it. I let myself get into such a state and had the pity party of a lifetime.
From that I learnt to take every month as an opportunity, not just to practice self-control but to heal myself! Pray and prophesy to your aches and pains. Stepping out in faith for yourself enables you to do so for others too!
Something that really helps me is simply going back to the Word of God. When you fill your mind with the things of above, you forget the things of this earth and you are unshakeable. Immerse yourself in worship and in talking to God. Get your strength from him and not solely from paracetamol or something stronger! (Not that these aren’t total lifesavers). God honestly understands what you’re going through, he created you, so you can run to Him!
Proverbs 3v25 ‘She is clothed in strength and dignity and she laughs without fear of the future’. That’s who you are! Prophecy that to yourself, you’re not in pain but in strength! You’re not dirty but completely dignified in Him!
Ephesians 6:14-15 “Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world”
Don’t use your period as an excuse for being off-duty for Christ, you’re still a city on a hill, a light shining before men!
Your thoughts and words have so much power at this time. Don’t be defeated before it even begins by your own negative thoughts. Even little thoughts of frustration; ‘why am I a girl?!’ … ‘Is it worth all this pain’… ‘I never want kids’… these may seem extreme but when you’re in pain and frustrated, you’ll be surprised at what you catch yourself saying and thinking!
You might be thinking that it’s just not possible for you to not be frustrated or angry, and you’re absolutely right! In our own strength, we are completely useless and are by no means capable of controlling ourselves to any extent. But I believe that that’s the beauty of it. You can do all things THROUGH CHRIST who strengthens you! You’ve got the same power living within you that raised Jesus Christ from the dead! Hormones ain’t got nothin’ on you!
The truth is, you have a voice, mighty woman of God! Don’t let momentary frustration of whatever reason rob the world of hearing it!
