Heart of Gratitude

written by Esther Egbeyemi September 9, 2016
Heart of Gratitude

I’ve been in a pretty reflective mood lately and have taken some time to think about all that God has done, especially in relation to this summer. My pondering got me thinking about how good God really is and the importance of us thanking him for all that he’s done.

We’re taught to go to God with our problems and struggles, seeking his comfort when life really sucks. This isn’t bad by any means and I’m always running to God when I’m facing tough situations in my life! However, take a minute to ask yourself how often you give God thanks when he’s blessed you? Or when he’s helped you get through the troubles you face?

This isn’t meant to be a telling off in any type of way, but it’s just a simple reminder of how important it is to give thanks where it’s due.

Just like you might be appreciative of a parent for bringing you up, a friend for sticking with you through all kinds of stuff, or a teacher for helping you out when you’ve been struggling with a subject, we should get into the habit of thanking God too, especially when considering the vast scope of all he’s done for us. I can’t even begin to comprehend this!

I was watching a short documentary on TV last week about a man who became trapped in his own body. He was perfectly healthy beforehand and in a moment, he had lost complete control of his body.

He was unable to walk, talk or even breathe on his own. Later on when his health began to improve, he expressed that he had taken all life’s simple acts for granted. We often only recognise the value in something once we’ve lost it.

Know that nothing is too small to thank God for. To echo what the bible says in Lamentations 3:22-23, the Lord’s mercies are brand new every single morning! Each day is a blessing in itself and that’s definitely something to be grateful for.

We have a Father who cares deeply about every aspect of our lives! I don’t know about you, but to me, that’s certainly a reason to thank him!
