Growing up I used to play a lot of sport, you name it I played it: Athletics, Cricket, Tennis, Swimming more recently Golf but no sport compared to my love of the beautiful game, Football; I lived and breathed (still do) the game.
For those of you who don’t know, I am a Tottenham Hotspur supporter #COYS and if you have been following the Premier League this season, you’d know that Spurs have been outstanding all season. If Manchester United do us a favour on Sunday by beating Leicester, then who knows, the title race (winning the Premier League) could be ours. I’ll just leave it there.
From a very young age I began playing football, my dad and I would play in the back garden or go to the park and just have a kick about. I played for my school and University team as well as playing club football!
However, being a young girl/woman who played football, came with its stereotypes and ignorances. Now there were occasions where a few people assumed, because I was female, there wasn’t a chance in the world that I could have pace, two decent feet, ping a decent ball let alone understand the offside rule, but as I mentioned previously, I make reference to only a few. If I wasn’t playing football I was talking about football, if I wasn’t talking about football, I was reading about football – you get the picture, I love football just check my twitter feed!
This week is Girls’ Football Week, encouraging young girls to take part and get involved in the sport and to continue to participate into adult and teenage years, where girls have often declined in taking part in sporting activities.
Here at Girl Got Faith, we want to encourage and inspire you to pursue things that often are seen as going against the grain of what young girls “should and shouldn’t do.” I’m always reminded of Philippians 4:13 when I’m told by someone that I can’t do something that; ‘I can do ALL things through Christ who gives me strength.’
Note that the scripture doesn’t make reference to gender, it just says ‘I’ meaning YOU, can do absolutely anything you put your mind to when Jesus is with you in spirit pursing your endeavours.
