It comes around every month bringing mood swings and back ache. That’s right, I’m talking about your period. Brace yourself because blood, vaginas and other intimate details about our time of the month are going to be mentioned. I know you gals can handle it though so let’s dive straight in.
There’s a lot that can be said about our time of the month, but have you ever stopped to think about what happens to all those tampons and pads after we use them?
In this post I want to talk about a more sustainable alternative to disposable sanitary product.
Ladies, I present you with the menstrual cup.
If you’ve never heard of a menstrual cup, let me explain. They are a cup shaped (crazy I know) piece of silicon that is inserted into your vagina and collects the blood from your period. Ok, I know it all sounds a bit gross and personal but let me explain 5 reasons why I think menstrual cups are the way forward when it comes to dealing with the crimson wave.
1.They Are Reusable
Apparently the average woman uses 11,000 tampons in her lifetime. That’s a whole lot of waste! Being a bit of an eco warrior, this was my main reason for making the switch. Menstrual cups are reusable, way better for the planet and can last for years.
2.They Can Save You Some Dollar
I think my cup cost around £20, but after that initial spend you’re sorted. So all that money that you spend monthly on sanitary products is yours to do what you wish with. I’m daydreaming about the puffer jacket I can buy with all the money I’ve saved right now….
3.It’s Actually Super Comfy
I’ve tried both tampons and pads, and while I never had major issues with either, my cup is genuinely way more comfortable. Pads can often feel a bit like you’re wearing a nappy (not the vibe I’m going for) and tampons can dry you out. Not to mention the string just gets in the way when you need the loo. As for my cup, I often forget that it’s even in which is a winner in my book!
4. No Leakage
Another great reason to try out a menstrual cup is that it can hold up to 3 times more than a regular tampon. I always found that my tampons end up leaking a little whereas my Mooncup keeps it all in until I’m ready to empty it. No awkward leaks means those light wash denim jeans are back on the cards all month long ladies!
5. They Are Not As Scary As They Look
I have to admit I was a little intimidated by the size and shape of the cup at first but you really don’t need to stress. It comes with easy to follow instructions on how to insert, empty and clean your cup. Easy peasy.
So why not give it a go. If you’re interested check out Mooncup which is the brand I use. Their website has a whole load more info and a fun ad campaign as well. Make the switch to save some money, look after our beautiful planet and make your period a little bit easier to handle.
