Be Your Own Best Friend

written by Katie October 19, 2019
Be Your Own Best Friend

I bet that not long ago there have been moments where you’ve thought to yourself things along the line of ‘I can’t do this’, ‘I will never get over this’, ‘I wish I was more like that’ or ‘God is definitely angry with me’ or endless other negative thoughts. I can confidently say that if I asked you whether you would say any of the above to your best friend, the answer would be a definite no.

Not only do we often think things about ourselves that we wouldn’t say to anyone else, more worryingly we believe them to be true and even that God agrees. It was recently that I was challenged by someone: am I being a good friend to myself? Does what I say to myself line up with what the bible says about me or my life?

It’s challenging isn’t it? I think it’s so natural for us to be self critical, self doubting and just not that kind to ourselves. We may even try to call it modesty! But yet the bible never says anything of the sort. The message that the bible shouts loud and clear to us is about our infinite worth, acceptance and adoption.

We can miss the point completely of the gospel at times. God died for your sin and to make you right with the father, but you miss out on amazing news if you leave it there. God also adopted you as a child so that you could know him not only as your saviour but also your father. He didn’t have to do that, he could have just forgiven you and left it there, but he didn’t. He invites you to be a daughter of his. And he does it because he loves you, knows your infinite worth and because he LIKES you. God is your greatest fan.

If this is our reality and that is God’s opinion then we really need to be careful with what we speak over ourselves. I’ve been asking God recently to help me ask two questions when I think things about myself:

1. Would I say this to my best friend?

2. Does God say the same over me? And if not what does God say?

When your thoughts agree with God it brings life.
